"*NOW* with More Reasons For You to Feel Inadequate!"

Haha. Amen to that.

Metrics metrics metrics. I know it keeps the treadmill going and gets many involved and driving growth etc... but yeah, slow grow. That's the way!

Slow grow, and frequent Substack blackouts (even if only for a day!)

My Substack blackouts at the moment are far too frequent. :(

But, we really were having a gay old time, with our artisan gingerbreads and nut-crusted cheese bouches..!! 😭 At the end of the day, I love complaining, and there is much to complain about (leaderboard, rising, ever more bloody 'metrics' being plastered everywhere and forced down everyones throats 🤮 - I wouldn't mind so much if there were the option to opt out!) so I suppose I should be grateful... 🤷🏻‍♀️💜 But, I did notice a cold chill run through my body when I read your self-inventory question...so, that was good to recognise!

hehe Yes metrics - it's not so much that they're there, but that they are sitting quite so close and mouth breathing all over us. 😐 Settle down, Substack... 😘

If you do share some of your work outside of the substack world, please let me know where Troy! As I want to read all the sassy, witty, humorous, heartfelt writing you produce.

I really enjoyed this piece, I think you said what a lot of us have been thinking. I mean, “yay, Substack has every fucking celebrity and their dog on here now, woohoo! So glad I won’t miss any of their stuff even though I came here, at least in part, to avoid such nonsense…”

But seriously, I’m glad our scotch tape community is still going strong :)

You won't be able to shut me up about an article somewhere outside of Substackland. ;)

The whole thing really does feel a bit topsy turvy at the moment, yes, but we will always have our little garden of pipe cleaners and Elmer's school paste. 🙏

I feel you. This dance is a bit much, but where else would we put all of our selves? I agree the leaderboard is maddening.

It makes no sense at all - the old one was bad enough, but with this new one, I see people celebrating that they're in such and such position "Rising" and when I went to see what that was all about (because it's only available on the app, and use web almost exclusively) they are no where in the rankings at all. And what is the opposite of Rising? I can't bear to think of this manufactured competition when we're all just here to craft the most beautiful, funny, insightful words we can. I say, Fuck it, Leaderboard who? Let's just sit over here in the corner and eat our popcorn... xo

It is sort of insane. I see people with 237 subscribers in the top 100 rising, next to people with 8k!

Im so sorry to hear about the dear grandmother’s passing.

Thanks love.

It is super kooky, it reminds me of log rolling. I'm also getting really tired of people banging on about notes notes notes for growth. Enough!

I actually love putting my note out each day and being part of the crazy notes boost. But I have to LIMIT my time spent scrol;ling.

Also — I feel a lot of these questions (in my own way). I guess my lack of time this academic year has helped me to assess what I want to do next / how to develop. The answer is clear as mud but still feel like the questions are helping and useful! I’m happy to read “just” your fiction and commentary. But your podcast and community newsletter are also great! Would love to talk more about all this as we consider the possibilities… Go Troy 💪🏽 🌈💜💜

I definitely prefer our scotch-taped, safety-pinned village to the shinier version. It's where all the best folks hang out.

Well done articulating your vision Troy. I love that a part of it is to allow us to know you. I have a sense that is rare among writers as we tend to want to hide behind the words. I don't think you realize what a leader you are in the space you hold online. You are our brave, articulate, heart-centered leader and we are very thankful!

You are so sweet to say so, my dear - you also hold a special place in my heart and in many others. Let's keep on being brave! Two years ago, I was mortified to think of people reading my words - and now, look at us. Courage comes from facing your fears and walking through them. 🩷💜💙

Your “symphony of nonsense” makes a helluvah lot of sense to me. I’m wary of the question “What’s your vision?” because it presumes this intuitive, slow-growing, relationship-nurturing, process needs to have a cherry-on-top be-all-end-all grand hurrah. And all I’ve ever learned is that I’m much more aligned with said “goal” when I let life take me there instead of pre-assigning what that is.

So hurrah for slow grow!
