sounds like a great spree! mine would probably include a lot of yarn, more noir mysteries, and a fedora. happy pre-birthday and fingers crossed for a new job for your hubster soon. :)
Coco Cubana & the tulips are a delight, as are your new glasses - is the fantastic wooden nose that they’re rested on part of the spree-hoard, too? I’m in love with it.
I really enjoyed Higgs’ Blake book. Almost as much as I loved hearing about your tête-à-tête with Cressida Bell!!
The nose has been around for awhile, he's very Easter Island and keeps an eye on things from the shelf. O.o
I was horrified to learn from Higgs that it sounds like the vast majority of Blake's papers and art may have been destroyed by the guy Catherine Blake left in charge? Tragic.
Cressida was a hoot - I've dreamed for years of buying an English ruin and hiring her to decorate it over many months of high jinks. :D
Oh no, I missed the unedited, insensitive version & now I’ll be forever curious ;)
He is very Easter Island! He's gorgeous. And yeah, it’s pretty devastating, I’m especially sad that that we’ll never see the portrait of Catherine that he drew on his deathbed.
I bet Cressida was an absolute treat to spend time with. I fully support your English ruin & high jinks dream, and I humbly ask that you film the whole thing so we can get some kind of less depressing Grey Gardens documentary out of it 🙏
(We’ve booked tickets for Charleston on my birthday in early September, btw. Super excited).
Oh that IS exciting! You must press the docent in the upstairs drawing room about Vanessa's painting to the far left of the fireplace - "the poison cup" - she will become very uncomfortable if you inquire too closely... 😃
I can spot a Vintage spine a mile away. Had to zoom-enhance to see what it was before I scrolled and saw you then went into details. Not read it, but probably should.
Only read Calvino's "If on a winter's night ...", which I enjoyed.
What is this Little, Big I've never heard of?!! Instant TBR based on yours and Le Guin's words.
Also, fave line: "a whole lot of web and no spider—pretty but bloodless." 😁
Hope the unemployment is brief. And an advanced happy birthday for soon!
You are in for a treat, Nathan!!! Little, Big is the closest thing to actual magic anyone's ever written. Strange, too, because while I can't help but respect Crowley, none of his other work has come close (Aegypt, maybe? I struggle to even remember what it was about) - it's like he was channeling a voice from Faërie. I used to buy used copies to give to people, but it's never out of print nowadays. Enjoy! 🕷️🕸️🎂
That looks like a good haul. The local library had a book fair last week and we came back with a pile of stuff for a whopping $20, and that was a donation, if you're a boor, or really hard up, you can walk out with the stock for free. They do these 4 times a year... good stuff! I had a Calvino streak in my early twenties. It was suitably baffling :)
A GOOD HAUL haha sounds like privateering on the high seas... LOVE a good library sale, perhaps they have them around here too but they'll all be Spanish or Catalan. Baffling is the word I was searching for :)
This was such a fun read Troy.
I very much enjoy your sassy humour. Your notion that shopping is the fiercest of all sports was hilarious.
And how fun to go on a shopping spree that is actually encouraged! - my partner would love this.
I also found your comparison of Spain and the US really interesting, I hope to make it to Spain one day it sounds amazing.
Thanks Michael! It was fun writing (and researching) it. ;)

Thanks Andrea! We've got one last item from the spree: tickets to Tom Jones! Should be wild - and walking distance from our house!
woohoo! you'll have to write about that for sure!

Apologies, I edited my comment for sensitivity.

Oh will do! Thank you for the tip. Absolutely love a flustered docent 😄
I love the picture of Mangeaux. Forced shopping spree....how terrible....
Monster!
Sprreee wheeee.
Lovely stuff, what a boon.

Well, sounds like I'm in for a real treat! Thanks so much for bringing it to my attention.
I would LOVE to shop with you.
To the GRAND BAZAAR! :D🎉

Always fun to go in a spree. Especially when your husband advises that you’d be better to do so. OMG! Maybe there’s a God after all.
He made me do it, it was awful ;)
